General Information

Hand Hygiene practices in the Emergency Department setting represent a unique challenge with distinct environment, staff and patient factors compared with inpatient wards.

Interventions including the placement of hand hygiene products at point-of-care and staff education may be more complex in this setting.

Hand Hygiene Australia has adapted the World Health Organisation's Hand Hygiene Self Assessment framework to be specific to the Emergency Department setting. Additionally, all Emergency Departments are now required to collect and submit compliance data to Hand Hygiene Australia as part of the National Hand Hygiene Initiative.
